I work as a sales engineer for Polycom uk, based the lovely surroundings of slough, home of the office tv programme. it not a bad place to be as you go home each evening, leaving slough behind you. one strange story is that there is a regus office next door and that is where my brother met his now wife at their work.
I work mainly with bt conferencing supporting their requirements for technical advice on the polycom range of video conferencing products. i can also be found at their offices over in paddington, london.
Prior to joining Polycom, i worked at telinet, a telecommunications company based near london bridge in london. i spent seven years there, starting out as an engineer and then progressing to it manager and then finally being pre sales for the sales team. i worked with the avaya index, ip office and acm systems and then with mitel 3300 ip pbx for voip.
Apart from my telephony skills, I also taught myself all of the Microsoft products such as the operating systems – dos 3.3 upwards, windows 3.1 to vista and windows nt server 3.51 to server 2003. then server products such as exchange 5.5 to 2003, sql 6.5 to 2005. other applications that i have learnt to deploy are products such as apache web server, php, mysql, bulletin board servers. basically if it has an installer, i will get it working.
Other skills include building pc’s from the ground up with a box of bits. the only problem with knowing so much about i.t. is that you end up being a 24 x 7 call centre for the parents.
